Ten percent is the number allergists keep landing on: roughly that share of the U.S. population tests positive for dog sensitization on a skin or blood panel, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI). What the marketing on a puppy website rarely tells you is that the breed standing in front of you doesn’t reliably predict whether you’ll be one of them.
Here’s the mechanism, because the mechanism is the whole story. Dogs produce a family of allergenic proteins labeled Can f 1 through Can f 6, generated in saliva, sebaceous (skin oil) glands, and to a lesser degree urine. Can f 1 is the dominant one clinically. The so-called hypoallergenic breeds did not come out lower. In several comparisons they measured higher. The researchers’ conclusion was blunt: there’s no evidence to support labeling any dog breed hypoallergenic, because the label conflates coat type with allergen output, and those are two different biological processes.
That doesn’t mean breed choice is irrelevant. It means the mechanism you’re managing is airborne dander and saliva transfer, not hair volume on the floor. A dog that sheds less visible fur still grooms itself with saliva, still produces dander from turnover of skin cells, and still deposits both around a house. What changes between breeds is how much of that allergen escapes into open air versus staying trapped in a denser, curlier coat until the next brushing — which is a real but modest difference, not the near-elimination the word “hypoallergenic” implies.

Individual variability matters more than the breed column
The AAAAI page is direct about this: not everyone allergic to dogs reacts to the same proteins in the same amounts, and dogs vary individually — not just by breed — in how much allergen they shed. That’s why the “friend’s dog didn’t bother me, but this one does” phenomenon is common and genuinely reproducible; the American Kennel Club’s breed guide for allergy sufferers recommends spending extended time with an individual dog — ideally in its home environment, over multiple visits — before committing, rather than trusting a breed label alone.
This is where I land with clients who ask me to just name the “safest” breed. I won’t crown one. What I recommend instead is a two-part strategy: favor coat types that trap rather than release dander (single-layer, curly, or wire coats that need regular professional grooming — Poodles, Portuguese Water Dogs, and similarly coated crosses fit this group), and then treat that as a starting filter, not a guarantee, followed by real pre-adoption exposure time with the specific dog. The counterargument I hear most is that this is more work than just picking a name off a “hypoallergenic breeds” list — and it is. One more variable worth naming: grooming frequency changes allergen load more than most owners expect, and the AAAAI notes that bathing measurably lowers Can f 1 in the short term but levels return to baseline within two to three days. That argues for a maintenance rhythm, not a one-time deep clean before move-in day.
A single bath won’t fix a dog-allergic household. It buys you a few days.
Setting up the house, not just picking the dog
If you do move forward with a lower-shedding breed, the environment around the dog does real work too. Owners I’ve counseled through this have had the best luck combining a curly- or wire-coated dog with a defined dog-free bedroom, a HEPA filter running in shared living space, and a grooming schedule closer to every four to six weeks than the standard three months. None of that requires a specialty product line — it’s mostly routine.
